There isn't many lens in the EF-M world. So far only 8 native lenses are released. If one wish to own a lens that could do anything, reliable, portable and sharp, than the premium priced 18-150 might be the answer.
With no competitor apart from Tamron 18-200, no faster alternatives like the M43 system, the 18-150 has became the only viable option for those who demand light weight and versatile gear to enhance their photographer experience with EOS M.
The lens is not produced in large number. So far only some EOS M5 have included this lens as kit. For M50 users like me, it is a pain in my butt to buy this lens brand new at retail price of 4380HKD.
Luckily, as professional camera hoarder, i was able to buy this used at ridiculous low price, thus this review has born.
In short, this lens is not of stellar quality. It just a lens that is comparable to my OM 14-150 II or the Lumix 14-140 II at first glance.
To be frank, any primes in EOS M world would beat this lens to dust.
So what made this lens dserves 5 stars? What made this revolutionary? Simple, light weight, focus distance and exclusivity that makes the notorious known soft 15-45 and 55-200 become obsolete.
Weighted only 300g, the 18-150 is the lightest superzoom lens among APSC superzoom. Thw combined weight of only 687grams on my M50 is no burden when carrying.
Superb close-up captability (of only 40cm from sensor to subject) is not something you would expect from a superzoom. Yet, Canon has engineeted this to as focus as close as 40cm (measuring from sensor to subject). This implies one can use this lens for food photography, selfie and close-up purposes to with compromise. Needless to say, this lens could be used for landscape, wildlife, street snaps thanks to its reliable AF, in body stabilization and decent image quality.
The 18-150 is a slow lens with F6.3 aperture at tele-end. The F value goes to F6 beyond 70mm, render it difficult to use in low-light environment, but thanks to its IS, it is still usable at in-doors envoronment at higher ISO.
Sharpness of this lens is mediocre wide open. Yet it still better than 15-45 & 55-200 in the center, on par at the corners. When stopped down to F8 to F11 the 18-150 begins to distinguish itself from the two and become very sharp across the frame up till 100mm range. The lens struggled abit to produce sharp image at 150mm end, but it still one notch above 55-200mm image quality across the frame.
Overall i am very proud of having the lens, as it serves me well, can do almost anything in a compact size and can focus up-close. It is very versatile, portable occupy an exclusive territory that serious photographers envious of.
